noun
wardrobe
A tall cabinet for storing clothes, or all the clothes a person owns.
Where it comes from
A wardrobe can mean a tall cabinet for clothes or all the clothes a person owns. English borrowed it from a northern French form corresponding to garderobe, built from elements meaning guard and robe. Early English wardrobe could name a private chamber and then a room or large closet where clothing was kept. A cabinet could perform the same storage job on a smaller scale, so the room’s name moved to the furniture. It then spread once more from the storage place to the clothes collectively.
How the meaning developed
Your wardrobe became portable only after the room’s name shrank to the cabinet and spread to its contents.
